Why, hello! Hello! Hello! Welcome back to another amazing and intricate entry of the Weekend Whiz! This week I have a ton of stuff to cover (when one comic is equal to 400 pounds that is! Ha ha!) and I hope you’re as excited as I am! This last week was a good one for comics and I had my chance to sit down and read so many! But enough with the wackiness, let’s get back to business. Here’s what I’ll be covering this week:
- Civil War: House Of M #1
- X-Men: Magneto Testament #1
- Secret Invasion: X-Men #2
- NYX: No Way Home #2
- Ms. Marvel #30
Now that’s a mix of Marvel comics I like to see! Let’s begin!
**spoilers and speed to be expected after the break**
Civil War: House Of M #1
When I heard this series was coming out from Marvel I almost died. I effing loved House Of M. Every moment of it, and to find out the origins of this monumental event I was peeing my pants in anticipation. The story begins and is somewhat rushed. The story is the origin of Magneto. Things go as they normally would in Magneto’s life until 1 subtle thing happens. When Magneto is in Egypt instead of meeting Xavier like the original story, he instead saves a mutant from being killed/captured by a sentinel. This alters things completely and the story goes severely awry as Magneto befriends Apocalypse and forms a very powerful Brotherhood of Mutants. The issue ends with Magneto standing his ground in an argument with Apocalypse and we see Charles Xavier at the end of the issue as some bad ass stuff goes down. Definitely important to the origin of House Of M. Everything is simply spelled out in a fast paced manner to get you up to speed. Next month I’m guessing we’ll see some very interesting explanations as to how things came to be the House Of M.
X-Men: Magneto Testament #1
THE OFFICIAL MARVEL ORIGIN OF MAGNETO BEGINS HERE!!! Marvel has decided to sit down with Greg Pak and spell out the origins of their most wishy-washy originated character ever (I’d say even more than Wolverine!). Beginning in pre-WWII Germany, Max Eisenhardt–Magneto’s true name–is a student in a German and very pro-Nazi-minded public school. Max is just a runt in love with a gypsy (Magda) and it felt to me that people knew he was a Jew and were slightly hating him. Max shows some subtle power over magnetism and leaves school… where he sees his father being persecuted for being a Jew by Nazi soldiers! Immediately things begin to change and Max’s family decides they want to leave Germany. The next day, Max, who was awarded a medal for throwing a metal javelin, is stripped of his medals unless he can throw a heavier javelin just as far. Max completes this feat (with the help of a convenient mutant power) but is still stripped of his medals for simply being a Jew. The end of the issue we see Max getting beat up by his non-Jewish classmates. It was all very well done nd I’m very much excited for this true origin of Magneto.
Secret Invasion: X-Men #2
Secret Invasion is hitting the west coast and the Skrulls are scared! They’ve sent in their big guns (the Super Skrulls) and the X-Men are fighting with all they have! The fight is monstrous. We see a briefing of the situation by Cyclops, Emma Frost and Beast to the rest of the X-Men and Cyclops is sure they will win the fight. Meanwhile we see Nightcrawler talking with the mysterious orb he took from the Skrulls in the previous issue. This orb seems to be oddly convincing/hypnotizing Nightcrawler as it scans his entire mind and using any and all weaknesses to its advantage. It’s very odd. Jump to a monster fight with the Skrulls again and Nightcrawler is now hearing the orb’s voice in his head making him rethink his choices in this battle. As this is happening, Emma Frost and the Stepford Cuckoos are hatching a plan to take down the Skrull psi-block. Enter X-Force for some backup to the fight outside. Then as the psychic girls launch their plan, Emma Frost… dies? The issue ends with Cyclops bringing a dead Super-Skrull to Beast to allow him to counter the entire Skrull attack. What a doozy. Thanks Mike Carey!
NYX: No Way Home #2
Not sure where to start here. Last month left a totally crazy cliff hanger where the woman looking after the NYX kids–Cameron Palmer–was kidnapped. Meanwhile, Kiden, our super fast/slowdown world powered mutant main character of sorts, is seeing visions of her dead dad who is working as a makeshift helper in fixing all of this. All of the kids are scared: Bobby Soul wants to leave with his younger brother, Tatiana isn’t sure what she wants to do and Kiden wants to go save Ms. Palmer. Then there is a sudden change in the plot where it really looks like someone is trying to kill these kids. The cops show up at Cameron’s apartment and they jet out of there. Bobby decides to take them to see one of his shady gangster friends to find a place to crash. Bobby’s younger brother walks off and Tatiana goes to catch him when she is held at gunpoint by a man we find is named D’sean. Bobby’s brother, it turns out, has some kind of monster-projecting powers and scares D’sean as Tatiana bites him. With her odd blood-touching powers, she changes into an exact copy of D’sean and, out of fear, D’sean shoots Tatiana! And that’s the end of the issue! What a cliff hanger!
Ms. Marvel #30
Ohhhh boy. Brian Reed, you’ve done it again. One of the first Secret Invasion tie-in titles continues on this month with more bad-assery. After beating the living hell out of the majority of Super Skrulls in New York City, Ms. Marvel realizes she made a grave error when she told everyone to save themselves and head to the Raft aka super-villain prison. And it’s not because of the super-villains. It turns out, the Skrulls dropped the meanest and craziest Super Skrull there to wreak havoc. This guy is so bad even Ms. Marvel is scared of him. Their fight begins and goes on and on as Ms. Marvel is getting her ass handed to her by hundreds of different mixed powers that this Super Skrull has to offer. But Carol Danvers figures it out when she realizes this guy isn’t just after her, but is actually looking to kill the Skrulls too for turning him into a monstrosity. Lucky for Ms. Marvel, this thing uses up all of his energy killing as many Super Skrulls as he can and when he comes back to fight here, he simply can’t put up a fight… but the clincher in this issue is that this humongous beast of a Super Skrull wasn’t manufactured by the Skrulls, it was by Hydra! Oh my! Jump to 6 months in the future and craziness goes down with a high-head in the Hydra chain. Hooray for a new arc!
And with that kids, I leave you until next time! I hope you enjoyed everything!
