Future comic book reads

By Mike Rapin on July 9, 2008 in Random | 1 Response

I don’t know what it is, but whenever I see Nick blogging, I always feel the need to blog. Nick, do you feel the same way? haha

Anyways, my real post:

I haven’t read any comics in a few days (I finished my weeklies on Saturday) and it’s because 1) I’m lazy, 2) My girlfriend is around and 3) I’ve been way too tired to read (those are in no real order). But I want to let you guys know what I’m looking forward to read that I will (hopefully) be getting too in the near future and will, in turn, blog about. Most of this stuff is just what I’ve gotten a hold of and just want to read for fun and has no dealings with continuity or major plots or anything. Just fun stuff in vague/very interested sumary:

1. Squadron Supreme/Supreme Power v2
Seeing that I’m a die-hard Marvel Ultimate-universe fan, I need to read this series to get Ultimate Power and the new Squadron Supreme series that just came out. Now, the Squadron Supreme/Supreme Power series that I’m talking is NOT the series that ran into the Avengers way back when, but instead is the series totally off on its own that Marvel decided to have intertwine with their Ultimate universe (which I haven’t read yet, so shh!). But I’m really excited for this series. I’m 7 issues in and I have almost everything–except Dr. Spectrum–to read in trade paperback form. It’s obviously at the top of my list.

Ultimate Iron Man Review (Some Spoilers)

By Nick Nelson on July 9, 2008 in Marvel, Review | Leave a response

If you read my last post about Ultimates, you will remember that I am on a quest to catch up on all of the Marvel Ultimate series. Naturally, I want to read the main titles (Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimates), but there are also some side mini-series that I wanted to read (Ultimate Power, Ultimate Daredevil and Ultimate Iron Man). A couple of days ago, I decided to go through all the Ultimate Iron Man issues. I enjoy Iron Man in the regular Marvel Universe, so I was excited to read it, but I mostly wanted to read it cause one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors, Orson Scott Card, is writing it. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed at all. My full review and maybe a few minor spoilers after the break.

Chris Claremont and X-Treme X-Men part 3

By Mike Rapin on July 7, 2008 in Marvel, Review | Leave a response

Ah ladies and gents, I’m through issue #18 and that mean another update on my X-Treme X-Men reading.

As a reminder, I’m spoiling this series as I talk about my reaction, so watch out (even though the series is about 8 years old).

So far I’m having a lot of fun with this series in a sense that Chris Claremont seems to be batshit crazy when it comes to story arcs. Moving from Vargas killing Psylocke to Gambit becoming some tool of inter-dimensional imperialists (with some minor arcs in there — I’m not following the wikipedia page I’m reading in order of the comics I have #1-46) this series has been pretty good. I really do like Chris Claremont’s plots, but, as I’ve said, he just goes on and on with the narration.

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while, and let me just say it right now: Warren Ellis pretty much summed up exactly how I feel about writers like Chris Claremont at Wizard World Chicago when he had his late night panel on Friday. He was explaining that sometimes writers don’t know when to shut the hell up and let the art tell the story. And it’s funny because someone in the crowd actually called out and said “Could you tell Chris Claremont?” I wish I could have been there.

Ultimates 3 – A Review (Minor Spoilers)

By Nick Nelson on July 7, 2008 in Marvel, Rant | 3 Responses

I finally gave in and decided to break out of reading the Ultimate universe in trade paperbacks borrowed from Mike Rapin and start reading the Ultimate titles as the come out. There are several reasons for this. First, I really want to read Ultimatum when it comes out and will need to be caught up for that. Second, I am reading Ultimate Spider-Man monthly, so I don’t want to be too far ahead in that, but behind in the rest of the series. Finally, I really enjoy the Ultimate books and want to be able to read them as fast as possible. I’m just that kind of person. In my journey to catch up, I read the first four issues of Ultimates 3. I have heard that the series has really taken a slide in quality in the 3rd volume. I am not so sure. My reaction to the first 4 issues after the break. May contain some spoilers. You have been warned.

A long weekend for us

By Mike Rapin on July 5, 2008 in Random | Leave a response

Here at DestroyTheCyb.org, we’re taking a long weekend for the celebration of the 4th of July and to celebrate my friend still being alive after almost dying from an approximately 30,000 volt electrocution from a Jacob’s Ladder.

We should have more updates on Monday, but there is a chance we may feel suddenly inspired to post something later today or tomorrow.

Have a happy weekend.

Astonishing X-Men #25 — a reaction/sum-up

By Mike Rapin on July 3, 2008 in Marvel, Review, Spoilers | 1 Response

So yesterday I went and bought Astonishing X-Men #25 at my local comic shop. I bought it on my lunch break and didn’t have any time to read it yesterday, but this morning on the bus ride to work I managed to squeeze it in. Let me just say (before the jump) that Warren Ellis is amazing and he beats Joss Whedon any fucking day on Astonishing X-Men.

On the right here is a clip from the first page… we see Armor using Twitter. Hell yes Warren Ellis.

Batman: R.I.P.

By Nick Nelson on July 3, 2008 in DC, Rant | Leave a response

Hey Kids! This’ll be a short one, but I wanted to talk a little about the current arc in Batman. If you don’t know about what is going on in Batman right now, you really probably should, cause it is pretty revolutionary stuff. I admit that this is the first arc of Batman I have ever read, so I have no idea if this is really amazing Batman stuff or just the norm, but in my opinion, this is really great comic book writing right now.

Grant Morrison has been writing Batman for over a year now and I fully intend to go back and read through his run so far, but R.I.P. seemed to be a pretty good jumping on point in the story. I’m not really going to talk a whole lot about the story, cause truth be told, I don’t understand it 100% as I don’t know a lot of Batman background and I’ll probably just mess some plot points up. What I really want to talk about is the writing and art in this arc, because it is simply top-notch work.

Astonishing X-Men #25 – This week is gonna be awesome

By Mike Rapin on July 1, 2008 in Spoilers, Weekly Previews | Leave a response

Guess what guys? Guess effing what? Astonishing X-Men #25 is coming out this week (7/2/2008), and guess who’s excited?

ME!

Seriously. And you want to know why I’m so excited? Well, let me answer just one more question for you: Because Joss Whedon is no long writing this series. Hell yes! Yea! Yea! Yea! I’m beyond excited and it’s because without Joss Whedon, this comic book will (probably) come out on a regular basis and with some sweet storylines because the one and only Warren Ellis taking over meaning that Armor, Beast, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Storm, and Wolverine (the line-up according to cover for this issue) are in for a friggin’ show for sure.

The amazing Warren Ellis, author of Transmetropolitan, Newuniversal/Newuniversal: Shockfront, and the Extremis arc of Iron Man, is going to be writing Astonishing X-Men and I can only hope for nothing less than an outstanding series with him backing it. The new series titled Astonishing X-Men: Second Stage. It’s supposed to be back in the continuity and I couldn’t be happier.

What’s Coming This Week: 7/2/08

By Nick Nelson on July 1, 2008 in DC, Marvel, Weekly Previews | Leave a response

After last week’s huge list of Marvel releases, this week is going to be, as expected, a little slow. Still, there are quite a few great comics coming out this week that you should be looking forward to. We have an all new month starting in Amazing Spider-Man, where we are assured to get some questions answered. We also have the end to the extremely popular (and personal favorite) series Dark Tower: The Long Road Home. There is also a brand new comic coming out, Patsy Walker: Hellcat that looks pretty decent. And from DC, we have the continuation of the Batman R.I.P. arc. Hang on to those comic book hats, cause I have recaps and predictions coming up after the break!

Saturday at Wizard World Chicago

By Nick Nelson on June 30, 2008 in Convention | 1 Response

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending Wizard World in Chicago. Seeing as this was my first comic book convention, I did not know what to expect. I was not disappointed, as it turned into one of the most enjoyable days I have had in a long time.

The day started with a lot of waiting in line. After arriving at the show 1.5 hours early, we waited outside with lots of other die-hard fans, including some guys dressed like Nazis (they say it was for an anime, but I am still skeptical). After getting in the doors at 9 am, we headed to meet Brian Michael Bendis and get him to sign some books. I have to tell you, meeting him made my day. As anyone who reads this blog knows, I love his work, so getting to talk to him and tell him how much I enjoy his writing was a real thrill.
