gothamfox008Gotham’s heating up after this week’s episode and new surprises are in store. First thing we learned is Penguin’s major game and I have to say, it surprised me. It probably shouldn’t have but it did. I really like how they’re building Oswald’s character.

Penguin’s always been a strange character in the bat-universe. He’s a constant on the rogue roster, but his personality hasn’t been very consistent over the many interpretations. In the animated universe, he was a wacky bad guy that liked rare birds and umbrella guns. In the movies, he’s sympathetic if not grotesque. In the comics, he’s a major and gun runner but constantly up for debate and in the Arkham games he’s Australian, so really, it’s always been hard to pinpoint who Oswald Copplepot is when the Penguin hasn’t been a very compelling character. Gotham’s interpretation is my favorite so far; cunning and smart but also a coward. There’s a great dynamic in the character and I’m actually happy to see it play out.

While the internet seems to have come to this consensus since the show’s beginning, Penguin has actually taken over my interest from Jim Gordon. I like Jim, a lot. He’s noble and stubborn and growing. I like a character I can see a lot of potential in. But this episode, while being about Jim’s time to shine, left me slightly scuffed. The action was great but the follow-up left me a bit jaded. I understand Gordon can’t get everything done now, in the end, nothing seems to have changed at all. All the hoopla and none of the consequences. That’s not Jim’s fault, but the fact that it was Jim’s story leaves him lower on the list of interests than Penguin. Luckily for him, he’s not as low as Bullock, who didn’t seem to make the cut for development this episode.

Really, all my complaints feel like time restraints on the writers and I totally get that. There’s only 47 minutes in an hour but they’ve been so good about making it count and this time, nothing seemed to count this episode.

All of that said, it seems to have picked up a lot of interest. I’m still really excited for what’s in store but I wish I could call this one a slam-dunk on the list of great episodes, but the fact that it needs to be a powerful episode actually rules against it.

Let’s hope next week shows the fall out of everything. Because really, the GCPD needs some major re-tooling.

One last very important point: Was that a new room we saw in Wayne Manor? Could it be Bruce has more than just a parlor to roam? Or is it just a new view of that same room. It’s so hard to tell. What do you think, Cyborgs?

About The Author

I'm a recent Grand Valley State graduate with a BA in writing. Unwinding with a good cup of tea and a rain storm is my ideal writing setting but my real process is something a little more hectic. Growing up in a world of Sailor Moon and Disney, I’m a big dreamer and optimist. A fan of Batman since my early years, I’ve been involved in the comic community for almost half my life.

I was a DC girl for most of that time but have started venturing out into Marvel and Image and now look for anything I can find. I may be a stranger to giving an opinion and writing reviews but not to sharing my passion to anyone that will listen. On the off time I’m not writing reviews or working in customer service, I don the capes of my favorite female heroes and travel to conventions like NYCC and C2E2. In addition to cosplaying, I also take commissions for plush dolls and love finding new ways to express my interests. Feel free to look me up on tumblr or twitter as I spend too much time on social media, devouring new information on comics and movies.

My love of travel and writing has taken me across the United States and over the pond to the United Kingdom. I’ve also worked the craziest time of the year at Disney World one Christmas (and thinking of doing it again)! I’m always looking for an excuse to visit a new place or get together with friends. There will hopefully be a book out there someday with my name on it but until then I’m thrilled to write for Destroy The Cyborg! and be part of this awesome geeky family.
