Weekly Comic Previews: August 27, 2008
August 26th, 2008
I’ll start of this week’s comic book previews by stating that I had a really, really, really hard time deciding which comics to feature this week. It is true, there is a lot of good shit spewing from mighty Marvel tomorrow and I, for one, am super pumped. Despite having to remove some really awesome books from this post, I still have a delicious line-up of comics to talk about this week. This includes the return of one of my favorite series, the end of an arc in another, a one-shot in yet another. I also have the long delayed Kick-Ass and a bunch of Secret Invasion tie-ins. Don’t close that tab and hit the break for a look at what you should be buying this week!
Teenage drama at its very best. What would you do if you found out your parents are super-villains? Well, you could be like the Runaways and…well…run away. Starting its 3rd volume, the amazing story of this group of teenage posthumans just trying to survive and find there place continues. If you were put off of the series a little by the long delays of Joss Whedon (it’s ok, Joss, we still love you!), then you should really come back to the book. Writer Terry Moore should be a little more on top of things than Whedon was. Only time will tell if his stories will be as good, but I have a feeling we won’t be disappointed. I, however, might be a little disappointed in Humberto Ramos‘ pencils, as the previews seem to be a little more cartoony than I would like. Still, I cannot wait to go pick up my copy of the restart of one of my favorite series. Check back on Wednesday for my full review.
Speaking of favorite books, Daredevil is ending an arc this week. What can I say about Ed Brubaker other than “wow”. This man knows how to write, especially a character like Daredevil (his Cap is pretty awesome, too). This arc has been centering around a man Big Ben Donovan, who has been falsely accused of murder and will be sentenced to death. Even though he, and a lot of other people know he didn’t do it, he won’t say who really did. He is protecting someone, and we’ll find out the truth in this issue. I have been blown away by this arc. I have loved Daredevil since I started reading it about 30 issues ago, but there is something about the “Law and Order” type of story here that really hit for me. I highly suggest picking up the whole arc.
Warren Ellis has been creating an amazing story with his Newuniversal titles, starting with Newuniversal and continuing with Shockfront. And his hand-picked writer, Kieron Gillen, blew me away last month with his 1959 one-shot. This week, Newuniversal returns with another one-shot, Conqueror, written by another hand-picked writer, Simon Spurrier, and I fully expect this to be another huge success. Set 5000 years ago, this is the story of one of the first super-human as he tries to defend his kingdom from invaders. Dive deeper into the Newuniversal universe and pick up this one-shot tomorrow!
Ok, to be fair to Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it hasn’t really been that long since the last issue of Kick-Ass. But the book is so good that waiting 1 week is long enough! I wanted to feature Kick-Ass #4 this week because I have been anxiously awaiting to find out who the katana wielding little girl is and why she has suddenly shown up in our lovable hero’s life. All (or at least some) will be reveled this week, so go pick up Kick-Ass #4 and 1-3 if you haven’t been reading. It is too good to miss!
Remember that little mini-series, New Avengers: Illuminati that was written a couple of years ago? Well, guess what? That little group of super powerful superheroes has a little secret and it might have caused the Secret Invasion. Seriously, you don’t get much better than Brian Michael Bendis writing a Secret Invasion tie-in. I love the idea of the Illuminati and can’t wait to see their big, dark secret. I know it is going to be shocking, cause BMB doesn’t write anything trivial.
Last month, my favorite Secret Invasion tie-in was Avengers: The Initiative, as they told the story of a young Skrull who didn’t believe like his brethren and didn’t want to take over the Earth. Hopefully, this month’s issue can bring some of that same magic and get me out of this “I am really sick of Secret Invasion” funk that I am in. Tomorrow’s issue is about the return of the Skrull Kill Krew. I’ll admit I don’t know a lot about the original Kill Krew, as I never read anything with them, but it sounds like there could be a lot of Skrull killing action here. A bug change from last month’s book. I’m crossing my fingers that I will continue to be surprised at the quality of The Initiative.
Secret Invasion: Amazing Spider-Man #1
One of my favorite writer’s, Brian Reed, brings us the start of Spider-Man’s Secret Invasion adventure this week. If this book is half as good as Reed’s other tie-in, Frontline, this’ll be a great read. And it is Spider-Man, so it should be good. And it features the whole cast of Brand New Day. And it takes place in New York, the heart of the invasion. And did I mention it is written by Brian Reed?
That’s it for my round-up of what should be the highlights of the week (in my opinion, at least). So make sure you make it out to your local comic book shop and pick up these and many other great comics. Happy Reading!!!
