Weekly Comic Previews: August 20, 2008
August 19th, 2008 -- mini-url
Is it just me or did that week go by really fast? I feels like I was just writing about the August 13 comic book releases and here we are with August 20 already. Hey, I’m not complaining, that just means more comicy goodness for all of us to enjoy.
With the summer quickly coming to a close, Marvel’s got a bunch of great comics coming this week (sorry, DC, nothing I was all that interested in this week). First, we’ll start with a big new arc in Amazing Spider-Man. I’ll also talk about a couple of awesome, fan-favorite books, one which is ending an arc and another that is starting one. Finally, there are a couple of great one-shots that should round out a nice pickup at the shop this week. I’ll tell you more, if you just hit that break!!!
Big arc starting in ASM tomorrow called “New Ways To Die” (is it just me, or are there a lot of ominous arc titles lately?), which brings back John Romita Jr. to the series. If that does make you excited enough, Venom is also returning. And if you still aren’t jumping out of your seats and camping outside of your local comic shop (seriously), Norman Osborn is going to return as the Green Goblin. OMGWTF!!!
One of the most consistent Marvel books out there right now is Ghost Rider. I never get super excited when I see Ghost Rider on the release calendar, but every single month when I read it, I am satisfied and ready for the next issue. Coming this week, everyone’s favorite flaming skull (sorry, Blazing Skull) is starting a new arc, which marks the return of Danny Ketch!
The other really consistent Marvel book, Incredible Hercules, ends it’s Secret Invasion tie-in this week (about time). In all seriousness, this was a really awesome Secret Invasion tie-in. They really managed to take the SI story concept and come up with a great, original tale. I highly suggest picking up the Herc tie-ins and then continuing to pick up Herc monthly. You won’t be disappointed.
Immortal Iron Fist: The Origin of Danny Rand
Telling the story of Danny Rand, the current Iron Fist, is the one-shot, The Origin of Danny Rand, which comes out this week. Again, Iron Fist is such a great book and expect this issue to be extremely well done as well. Matt Fraction returns to his baby, and he is backed up by co-authors Roy Thomas and Len Wein.
Did you forget about the girl who “knows stuff”? Marvel sure didn’t. This week, they are releasing X-Factor: Layla Miller, which is a tale of Layla in the future (which is where she is stuck, if you remember your X-Factor history). I’m looking forward to seeing what is up with Layla since getting stuck in the future (she is one of my favorite X-Factor characters). Not to mention, X-Factor writer Peter David is writing this, so you know it’ll be of the same quality as the main series.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Don’t forget to get down to that local comic shop and pick up these and many other amazing comics. Oh yeah, and Happy Reading!!!
