This weeks comics I’m looking forward to — 6/25/08

This week, we lucky kids who read in the Marvel universe are going to graced with some sweet comics. I’m talking über awesome.
First, we have a bunch of X-titles (and some related) coming our way: Angel: Revelations #2, Uncanny X-Men #499, Wolverine: First Class #4, Wolverine: Origins #26, and X-Men Legacy #213. Really, I’m most excited for Uncanny X-Men #499 and X-Men Legacy #213.
Second, my new love of a comic mini-series, Marvel 1985 #2 is coming out and I can do nothing but be extremely excited. This series is what any little kid dreams about and it simply came out of nowhere.. but of course, it’s another title by the ever-so-awesome Mark Millar, so it’s nothing short of pure gold.
**Spoilers of last week’s issues after the break**
Now, lets start with X-Men: Legacy #213. Last month we left off with Gambit (<3) and Xavier out in the desert, when suddenly Xavier is hit with a flashback/dream of Vietnam that is mixed with a metaphor of sorts illustrated as the X-Men as his army fighting his war for him and falling in his name. It was clever, but with that aside, Xavier wakes to Gambit’s calling and a battle with some Purifiers to which Gambit and the Professor X lose and we end with Xavier seen as a chile being talked to by Mr. Sinister.
Can you say bad ass?
This week, based on the promo art/cover I have seen and what’s happened earlier in this arc, I’m guessing some crazy stuff is going down with Sinister. I’m hoping that Gambit’s sudden skin/mood change is explained, because really, how did he go from Horseman of Apocalypse to regular old Gambit so suddenly? Of course, the whole testing with Xavier as a child and some crazy stuff with the one and only Cain Marko aka Juggernaut piled in there somewhere. This arc could be something more into the psyche of Xavier to further explain why he pushed so hard for his ideals.. I mean, sure they were for the betterment of mankind, but as people have said over and over, how easy would it have been for him to just push the general populous in his direction with his omega level powers?
Now, Uncanny X-Men #499. Last month showed some of the origins of “The Goddess” and a bit more of how much control she has over her part of the people in the San Fransisco. Of course, this part of the story was left off to an expected fight between Warpath, Iceman, Hepzibah, & Angel vs. Cyclops and Emma Frost… who knows how insane that’ll be… But what I find the most interesting in this series is the whole portion with Wolverine,
Nightcrawler and Colossus. This story ended with the guys breaking free from Torvarich and The Red Room and meeting good ol’ Omega Red. This is where I’m confused as to where this story is going to go.. of course if you remember back to when Omega Red was on the market back in New Avengers and such you can see where it could possibly be coming from, but for now, my speculation:
I’m guessing Torvarich bought Omega Red and was planning on having a ’super power’ for Russia only to come to find Colossus in the area and an easy target to attempt to capture. Of course, given last week’s talk between Omega Red and Torvarich, we see that OR has been leverage from Russia over SHIELD to return him… not really sure where that’s coming from, but lets hope some bad ass shtuff comes from it–which has to be summed up this week because #500 is a new arc with Secret Invasion and all that jazz involved! On top of that story line, we have the ending of The Goddess story I mentioned before which I’m thinking that she is going to be some A level mutant come back from the past (given the small bit of her origin in #498). This, of course will spark issue #500’s plot of the X-Men moving to California… Now, where does Secret Invasion come in? We’ll see tomorrow and I’m think it’s going to be pretty damn awesome.
Finally, Marvel 1985 #2. Again, Mark Millar. Wowzer. Last month we found out that a 13-year-old comic book-loving kid’s dream comes true when he, Toby, thinks he sees his favorite super villains (The Red Skull, Dr. Doom and the Mole Man) shacking up in the house of his dad’s former friend. That’s the jist. Simple and easy. And it turns out the kid’s right.
From what I’ve read online, this issue is going to be sweet. I’m talking the Hulk shows up and befriends Toby. That right there sounds awesome. Imagine our world suddenly over-run with just those aforementioned villains and just the Hulk. Instant awesomness… well until we start seeing death and destruction. All I’m saying is that this issue is going to be straight up bad ass and there’s no telling how much further Mark Millar could take this series.
And, yea, I’m excited for all of it.
