I’ve made no bones about my love for Buffy Season Eight, but it is genuinely one of my favorite series. A somewhat rocky start has given way to a masterful continuation of one of the best TV shows of the last 25 years, if not in the entire history of the medium. After finishing up the stellar “Wolves at the Gate” arc, Joss decided to spice things up a bit and plan a crossover with his first and, to me, still best major comics gig, Fray. So let’s get ourselves caught up with the last three issues, shall we?

post Buffy Season 8: Vol. 1 & 2

Do you love Joss Whedon? I sure do. With three TV shows, a movie based on one of his shows, and a direct-to-internet mini-musical, Joss Whedon has firmly entrenched himself in the pop culture pantheon. While Firefly has an obscene fanbase for such a short-lived show (I’m a proud Browncoat myself), Whedon’s real claim to fame is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

While I prefer the darker tones of its astonishing spin-off Angel, I love the hell out of Buffy. Over the course of seven seasons, Joss Whedon, a team of like-minded writers, and a cast of unknowns who were all about to be big crafted a universe that mixed pop culture-filled dialogue with metaphors about teenage and young adult life and a method of speech entirely unique to Joss. What started out as a sort of Kevin Smith meets the life lessons of The Cosby Show that subverted horror clichés as it taught turned into a self-sustaining show that could reference itself without it seeming pretentious and could teach its lessons in the background instead of making it the focus of episodes, allowing for a truly thematic show as opposed to merely a fun concept.
