post Runaways #10

June 4th, 2009 -- mini-url

This seems to be a recurring theme with me lately. Runaways #10 is another mid-series break with a couple of small, character building one-shot stories, and I’ve once again been charmed all to hell by the offering.

post Weekend Whiz: Reviews so fast you’ll pee your pants

September 15th, 2008 -- mini-url

Filed under: Review, marvel, spoilers, weekend whizMike Rapin @ 12:12 am

Why, hello! Hello! Hello! Welcome back to another amazing and intricate entry of the Weekend Whiz! This week I have a ton of stuff to cover (when one comic is equal to 400 pounds that is! Ha ha!) and I hope you’re as excited as I am! This last week was a good one for comics and I had my chance to sit down and read so many! But enough with the wackiness, let’s get back to business. Here’s what I’ll be covering this week:

Now that’s a mix of Marvel comics I like to see! Let’s begin!

**spoilers and speed to be expected after the break**

post X-Men: Legacy #215 — rehashing has never looked so lame

X-Men: Legacy #215 cover

Here we are, post Mr. Sinister trying to take over Charles Xavier, Sebastian Shaw and some other girl who isn’t really important (unless someone decides to make her so in the future) and I don’t think anyone knows what to expect out of X-Men: Legacy #215.

Mike Carey is definitely going way back and forth with X-Men story rehashing and, really, I don’t like it. I mean, sure the story is better when they pull from things from previous issues–because rehashing can be fun at times (see also: Uncanny X-Men #500 with Magneto going berserk)–but this month’s issue felt more forced than anything.

I’ve felt that X-Men: Legacy has been odd like this since it started. Messiah CompleX and X-Men: Deadly Genesis really changed the way that Cyclops and Charles Xavier act as characters which is good in a way, but from how the story is going now, things just aren’t as good as I’d could have hoped… it almost reminds me of 90s X-Men comics when they were in their decline.

post Uncanny X-Men #501 Review

When Uncanny X-Men came out last month, hitting the big #500 mark, I knew that I had to pick up that book. The series was being completely revamped and moving to San Francisco and it felt like the right time to get into Uncanny. And I was right, it was a great time to start reading. Unfortunately, Uncanny #500 failed to live up to what I thought that issue should have been. The chaotic, over-the-top story completely missed with me. It did manage to set up a lot of plot lines that will be explore in the upcoming issues.

This week, Uncanny X-Men #501 came out and Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker really hit the mark on this issue. I am very happy to say that after the break, I will have my full review/praise of Uncanny #501

post Tuesday Twist-offs — Miss anything last week? (8/13/08)

August 19th, 2008 -- mini-url

Filed under: Tuesday Twist-offsMike Rapin @ 9:44 pm

In case you happy-go-lucky kids are interested, I want to try and wrap up some of last week’s comics for you. Why? Because I forgot to do it on Sunday (Weekend Whiz) and mainly because I like to think in the back of my head that someone out there likes to read mini-reviews.

I want to cover a lot, so let me smear the boogers out of my nose real quick and get this instant-twist-off-winner series of reviews started before it’s over.

Lightning fast reviews for you:

And we’re off! Gotta love all those Secret Invasion stories!

**spoilers, as always, after the break**

post What’s Coming This Week: Uncanny X-Men #500

July 22nd, 2008 -- mini-url

Filed under: Weekly PreviewsNick Nelson @ 4:46 pm

It is Tuesday again and you know what that means: it is time to preview the comics coming up this week. It’s a bit of a slow week again but that doesn’t mean you should skip the local shop this week. There is one biggy that you should definitely go out and pick up this week: Uncanny X-Men #500!

Seriously, this is a pretty big deal. I mean, round numbers tend to be a big deal, right? But beside the cleanness of the number 500, there is a lot of awesomeness going on in Uncanny right now that makes this issue a big one. First, this is the first issue that has the X-Men in San Francisco, their new permanent home. Second, we are wrapping up the previous arc, which is always fun. However, don’t expect much action in this issue, other than setting up the next arc. The main baddies from this arc were pretty well taken care of last month. And the last reason you should pick this up: it’s a double size issue!

Oh wait! Did I forget to mention that we have new writers, too? I did? Oh, well, shit, guess what, the amazing team behind Immortal Iron Fist is taking over! Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker are sure to blow our collective minds with their outstanding writing.

Simply stated, this is probably going to be the best comic of the month and if you are an X-Men fan, you probably already have it reserved. If not, stop reading this and call your local comic book shop to make sure they have a copy for you! I guarentee this one will sell out.

post Astonishing X-Men #25 — a reaction/sum-up

July 3rd, 2008 -- mini-url

So yesterday I went and bought Astonishing X-Men #25 at my local comic shop. I bought it on my lunch break and didn’t have any time to read it yesterday, but this morning on the bus ride to work I managed to squeeze it in. Let me just say (before the jump) that Warren Ellis is amazing and he beats Joss Whedon any fucking day onĀ Astonishing X-Men.

On the right here is a clip from the first page… we see Armor using Twitter. Hell yes Warren Ellis.
