Batman and Robin #1 cover

I’m not a DC fanatic. Not one bit. I read JSA a bit and I keep up with summaries of major events from what I read online or hear from Nick, but other than that I don’t know much about the DC Universe. Despite all that I did what many new comic fans do: I picked up a #1 of a comic, in particular Batman and Robin.

Without giving away spoilers of Final Crisis (which I assume most people already know) I had an inkling as to what this series was going to be about, but never did I think I would like let alone thoroughly enjoy this issue. I couldn’t name one thing about this issue that felt off, and I barely understood half of the references to characters in the issue. It could be Grant Morrison‘s writing mixed with Frank Quitely‘s art, but hot diggity damn this issue was good.

More after the break. (some spoilers)

Last Will and Testament #1

If you’re looking for a good one-shot to read, especially if you’re into the Final Crisis series, then pick up DC Universe: Last Will and Testament #1 by Brad Meltzer (writer), Adam and Joe Kubert (pencils), John Dell (ink), and Adam Sinclair (colorist). This crew teams up to deliver a great story encompasing an abundance of beautifully illustrated characters such as: Geo-Force, Black Lightning, Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl, Nightwing, Starfire, Batman, Robin, Grace Choi, Rocky Davis, Captain Cold, Deathstroke, Superman, Green Arrow, Arsenal, Flash, Jim Gordon, Barbra Gordon, and others. A lot is covered in less than fifty pages, but a lot should be for the last day.

The primary story revolves around Geo-Force who…

post R.I.P. DC

January 19th, 2009 -- mini-url

batman-ripSo here we go. The reason I have not written anything since my first review way back when is because of my utter frustration with DC comics. Until about six months ago I had not read a comic in awhile. In fact it had been a long while and that is why I chose to cover for my first review an old personal favorite, Batman: Year One. When I decided that I wanted to re-visit my passion for comics I headed to the comic book store and  the first comics that caught my eye was from the Batman R.I.P. series, Batman Detective Comics #846. I was stoked.  My re-entry into the comic book world was at a pivotal point for the DC universe, the death of Batman! I realized that it was obviously a series, I mean you can’t kill Batman in just one issue, but at the time I didn’t realize the extent of the series. DC had decided to crossover titles covering Batman, Batman Detective Comics, RobinNightwing, and Batman and the Outsiders. I thought it was a great idea. I mean the death of Batman is going to affect everyone so why not cover it over a plethora of titles. Boy was I wrong.

Spoilers and more after the break.

post Identity Crisis (2004) Review

“If you want a good enemy, choose a friend – they know exactly where to strike.” – Green Arrow

The first time I read Identity Crisis, I was left feeling much like how many readers have felt – shocked, angry, confused, upset, thrilled and even a little scared. It was unlike any graphic novel I had read before, yet it was similar to books I had read in the past. But by incorporating the DC Universe, a family I have already been acquainted with, I was able to familiarize myself with each character quickly. This isn’t to say, you have to know DC to feel the full potential of this graphic novel. The story is open to old and new readers alike, dashed with past references for the old and fresh ideas for the new.
