post Wolverine #73 — the issue that came before #72

Wolverine #73I don’t know what the hell Marvel is doing with Wolverine, but whatever. We’re waiting on Old Man Logan, which is Mark Millar and Steve McNiven‘s god-send-child about Wolverine in the future that has been extremely delayed for reasons I couldn’t even tell you and all of a sudden Marvel decides they’re going to simply stop with that series, sum it all up in one issue, #72 has to be the last issue even though it’s part 7 of 8, and just jump into this new Wolverine story that appears to be a one shot in two issues but will somehow transition us into Dark Wolverine.

Let me take a deep breath quickly.

Wolverine #73 was a good pair of mini-stories which begins what appears to be the last two arcs of the Wolverine title before it is taken over by Dark Wolverine. After the break, I’ll divulge my feelings over it all.

That crazy Scot is at it again! You know I am talking about Mark Millar. And what he is at is Fantastic Four #560. Somehow, despite having a ton of books out right now, he manages to pump out issue after issue of pure, comic book gold. This month’s Fantastic Four is no exception.

Last month (or however long it was. Delays are not fun), our fearless foursome had all kinds of craziness going on. Johnny Storm had just gotten captured by the New Defenders and he and Dr. Doom were all set up to power a out of commission Galactus. On top of this, the Richards have a new nanny that is not all of what she seems.

After the jump, I’ll explain why I have a man-crush on Mark Millar and how it seems like he has a much broader plan in mind for his books.

post Rapid Reviews: Mark Millar Is Better Than You

September 17th, 2008 -- mini-url

As I slowly dip into more recent comics to pad out my endless list of must-buy classics, a few big names constantly crop up. Mark Millar is one of those names. In an attempt to both get into his stuff and try to somewhat get a handle on Marvel’s continuity so I could read Secret Invasion, I read Civil War, which I went on record as having liked it but not been wowed. Then I read the Superman Elseworlds tale Red Son, which is savagely brilliant. My interests finally piqued, I started picking up back issues of the titles he’s put out this year, which is no small task since the man apparently isn’t bothering to sleep or eat given the number of issues he’s written. Now that I’m finally caught up, let me try to explain why Mark Millar deserves every drop of praise he’s getting.

**spoilers and more after the break**

post Wolverine #67 Review

July 31st, 2008 -- mini-url

Filed under: ReviewNick Nelson @ 6:57 pm

Another month and another Wolverine comic. As I previewed on Tuesday, this is the second issue of the Old Man Logan arc by Mark Millar and, as expected, this is a great comic. I continue to be impressed by Millar’s ability to create a complex and deep story, and yet make it interesting to read.

Despite the extra wait for reasons that I don’t know and my need to read this comic this month, I endured the wait and didn’t pull the hair out of my head. Lucky for me, the wait was well worth it and I was able to recover some of my sanity after turning the pages of this issue.

*Spoilers Ahead*

post Weekly Comic Previews: July 30, 2008

July 29th, 2008 -- mini-url

It’s that time of the week again when I tell you what to look forward to at your local comic shop (or at least what I am looking forward to. You can do whatever you want). Some interesting stuff this week, including Wolverine as an old man, a one-shot featuring Newuniversal, and those little kids with the big punch, The Power Pack, fighting some Skrulls. Here we go, comic previews coming at ya!

Wolverine #67

It’s been awhile since I talked about the Old Man Logan arc by Mark Millar that is going on in Wolverine right now, but let me say, it is still awesome and it IS finally coming out this week. It’s been over a month and this book as been delayed a couple of weeks, but trust me, it is going to be worth the wait. If you don’t remember (or didn’t read it; shame on you!), Old Man Logan takes place in the future with a – you guessed it – older Logan. Last month, we found out he was having money problems, was being bullied by Bruce Banner‘s kids and goes on a road trip with a blind Hawkeye (ironic, I know) to deliver a package to the east coast to get money for rent. Two reasons why this book is awesome, if you couldn’t guess from the above description: Mark Millar is writing it and Steve McNiven is penciling it. Good enough reason for me to pick up a book.

post Old Man Wolverine (Spoilers)

June 21st, 2008 -- mini-url

On Wednesday, I had the honor to pick up Wolverine #66, which begins the new story arc written by Mark Millar (Civil War, The Ultimates, Wanted). Now, I have been a pretty big fan of the Wolverine book since I started reading it. It has always been written really well and, let’s face it, you can write a lot about Wolverine. He has countless stories that can be told about him. Just look at how many Wolverine one-shots have been coming out lately. And there of course was the recent Logan mini-series that talked about his past in Japan. So, I was slightly surprised, with all this backstory that can be written about him, that Mark Millar decided to write a story about the future of Wolverine. And coming off of the outstanding “Get Mystique” arc, I was nervous how this would turn out. However, after reading the first issue, I can tell you that it seems like, as usual, Millar’s judgment is spot on.
