Mysterio! The Gauntlet! Dan Slott! Oh my!

After not reading comics for almost two months, I finally went and picked up all of the comics I hadn’t bought and in this monstrous stack was Amazing Spider-Man #618. Penned by Dan Slott with art by Marcos Martin, this was the issue I have been looking forward to for months (since I heard word of it back in August) that was apart of Spider-Man’s “The Gauntlet.”

In case you haven’t been keeping up with Amazing Spider-Man, what’s been happening is this: all of Spidey’s old villains have been coming back… with a vengeance. The thing is, they’re not coming back to get Spider-Man, but they’re coming back to do what they do best: do selfish things. So far, we’ve had Electro, Sandman, Rhino (2.0) and this weeks baddy–Mysterio.

It’s been all very good so far, but this week’s issue… I wasn’t feeling it so much, which is a huge surprise since I have an absolute love for Dan Slott’s Spider-Man. But let’s talk more after the break.

*some minor spoilery after the break*

This week wasn’t too huge for me, but I had one comic I was really looking forward to: Amazing Spider-Man #576. Now, I meant to write a review for #575 but… well, it just didn’t happen. Nevertheless, these last two issues were utterly fantastic and I’ll go and sum things up in a moment.

Writer Joe Kelly entered the Spider-Man brain trust last week beginning his two-part series, “Family Ties.” Focusing around Hammerhead and the aftermath of him being saved by Mr. Negative this mini-arc is building more and more of the sub-plot that is Mr. Negative (yea, I know all ASM is doing lately is building, but bear with me).

But let’s get into things after the jump and I’ll give you the run down.

Have you been keeping up with Spider-Man? Have you? Because if not, you need to find the last 5 issues and buy this week’s issue. Mr. Dan Slott kicked so much ass in this New Ways To Die arc… so much ass. Coupled with John Romita Jr.’s art the last six issues of Amazing Spider-Man have been some of the most interesting and well developed comics I have read in a long time.

Previously, we’ve seen the creation of “Anti-Venom” in this series, the loss of Venom (well, Mac Gargan’s body lost the symbiote thanks to Anti-Venom) and then some craziness with the craziest man in comics: Norman Osborn. This month, it all comes to wraps in Amazing Spider-Man #573. But read on.. I dare you…

**spoilers and more banter than you could ever imagine after the break**

post This week: Amazing Spider-Man #566

Guys and gals! Did you hear the news?! Amazing Spider-Man is coming out 3 times a month and we’re only on issue two of this month!! Holy moly! What kind of mischief is going to fall down upon our favorite webslinger this week? Part one of Kraven’s First Hunt titled “Breakdown” was quite out of nowhere, but that’s what makes it fun… right? Part two is this week and wowee I’m ready!

The craziness that happened last week with everyone’s favorite Peter Parker in the mix, the internet (aka Marvel.com) is saying that this week we are surely in for a treat! Spider-Man is on his way to having a whole slew of villains on his butt including Mr. Negative, Kraven, and our new mystery girl who is apparently “the person who is going to kill Spider-Man.” This story is nothing outside of straight up crazy!
