I’ve been looking forward to the sequel to Hellboy since I first saw it in 2005, and even more so since I got the director’s cut, which adds very little and yet still vastly enriches the story. Hell, I hadn’t (and still haven’t) read any of Mike Mignola’s comics, but the wise-cracking, cat-loving portent of doom won me over within minutes of Ron Perlman’s defining portrayal. His immersion into the character is arguably the first time anyone in a comic adaptation truly took his role seriously. Yet, despite my impatient yearning, I almost forgot it came out this year thanks to it being buried under the hype of The Dark Knight. But I remembered just in time to catch it opening weekend, and I still don’t know what to think of it.
