New this week in the world of Marvel is the start of a month of new What If? issues from the publisher. In case you don’t know, What If? issues basically take an existing story in the Marvel universe and change something about the story and tell the outcome. Fun stuff, right?

This week’s issue focuses on House of M, that crazy Marvel event that ended with Scarlet Witch saying “no more mutants” and the outcome has been playing out in the X-books for the last few years. But what if she had said “no more powers” instead? That’s the focus of this issue.

Also, because Marvel loves us, part one of What If? Runaways Became The Young Avengers? That’s right, it’s like 2 books for the price of one. Want to know if it’s worth your money? Read on, true believer!

post Civil War: House of M #2 Review

October 16th, 2008 -- mini-url

Filed under: ReviewNick Wreden @ 9:36 pm

When I first heard that Marvel would be combining two of my favorite series, the Civil War and House of M, I nearly died with excitement. When I found out it wasn’t really the Civil War, but rather the origins of the House of M, I was a little confused, but still eager to get my hands on it. I’d never really been a huge fan of the X-Men and the other mutants, but their rise to power in the Scarlet Witch’s alternate universe had easily captivated me.

So a little late on my monthly visits to the comic book shop, I picked up both the first and second issue of this series and immediately started off toward home, ready to read them back to back. So, imagine my surprise that what I found between the covers was not an interesting origins tale of one of the greatest events in Marvel history, but rather a half-assed piece of crap with cheesy story telling and lazy art.

Before you blow me off as crazy House of M fans, read the rest of my review after the break.

It is that time of the month again, when comic book publishers put out their solicitations. Now, I have been eagerly awaiting the announcements of these for the past week. Seriously, ask those who follow me on Twitter. I’ve been annoyingly talking about solicitations for the past couple of days.

I’ve got a ton to talk about this month. Unfortunately for you DC fans, I’ll only be previewing Marvel books for December. This is mostly because none of the DC books that I read were at any place particularly exciting (yes, Superman is in the middle of the New Krypton stuff, but I’ve previewed this before). So, we’ll talk about some post-Secret Invasion stuff, a bunch of What If?s, Marvel “Noir” comics and the triumphant return of Marvels. Don’t touch that keyboard, cause if you are like me, you’re gonna need to choose between buying comics and buying presents for your loved ones…

In case you happy-go-lucky kids are interested, I want to try and wrap up some of last week’s comics for you. Why? Because I forgot to do it on Sunday (Weekend Whiz) and mainly because I like to think in the back of my head that someone out there likes to read mini-reviews.

I want to cover a lot, so let me smear the boogers out of my nose real quick and get this instant-twist-off-winner series of reviews started before it’s over.

post Secret Invasion: Inhumans #1 review

Holy ba-jeezus guys. This week is cram-packed with FIVE Secret Invasion titles and of all of them, I’ve decided to start with Secret Invasion: Inhumans #1. Boy-oh-boy this first issue is one that had me turning pages at near-rip-rate.

The last time we heard from the Inhumans, as a people not just Black Bolt, was in Silent War–a six-issue mini-series depicting exactly what happens when you mess with the Inhumans. The story begins in the aftermath of House Of M (Decimation) where Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff) gets away with the Inhumans’ source of power: the Terrigen crystals. Now, the Inhumans aren’t too happy with good ol’ Pietro and deicde to come after him. This ends up in a full scale war between the United States government and the Inhumans. The ending is simply this: Black Bolt loses this war in the eyes of his people and his brother Maximus becomes king of the Inhumans.

From here, we see Black Bolt a few more times in New Avengers: The Illuminati and in the most recent (I assume the last issue involving this whole group) Black Bolt is found to be a Skrull! And this is where Secret Invasion: Inhumans begins.
