When Nick and I, well mainly Nick, started this web site back in June we had no idea we’d be here 6 months later with 250 posts (this being the 251st) and still going strong.
As always we’re hoping to expand, take on more writers and get more comics reviewed. As we sit in comparison to web sites like IGN, Comic Book Resources, and Newsarama, hopefully soon we’ll be seen more as a down-to-earth set of reviewers rather than just a bunch of guys with a blog.
But this post isn’t about just the site as a whole, I, co-head-admin-whatever of DestroyTheCyb.org!, wanted to point out a few of our reviews I thought were above and beyond from each of our more active writers here/reviews I really enjoyed, and of course one of my own favorites (because I’m nothing without my ego!).
So, here’s my list of favorite reviews from all of our writers here at DestroyTheCyb.org! (no order of course):
Nick – Wanted (movie): a review
Erika - An Analysis of Watchmen: Symmetry and the Tragic Flaw
Jake - Superman: Red Son Review
Nick W. – Nick W’s Double Penetration Special Review: Secret Invasion #7 and New Avengers #46
Cory – Nightwing #150
Daniel – Invincible Iron Man #8
Shawn – Project Super Powers: Black Terror #1
Ben – Proof #1
Jeff - Uncanny X-Men #500
Matt – Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth
Me – The Astounding Wolf-Man Volume 1 review
And that’s that.
I’m hoping next year will be as awesome as the last six months has been for us here at DestroyTheCyb.org!
But now I gotta ask, what was your favorite moment in comics this year? Or what was your favorite review? Let us know!

I had low expectations for Frank Miller‘s adaptation of Will Eisner‘s The Spirit.
The first time I saw a trailer for the movie I was instantly worried, gone was the cartoony style of The Spirit that masqueraded the violence in the comic book and in it’s place we’re given Sin City like effects that showcased the insane blood bath, but also distracted from the actual story making some scenes completely unwatchable.
More after the break.

 Immortal Iron Fist #21 cover
I heard rumor about something from Duane Swierczynski in which Warren Ellis gave him an idea to write a comic about the Immortal Iron Fist in the future… in 3099 to be exact and I wasn’t sure when we devoted readers would see such a crazy issue. As luck would have it, that issue came out this month and boy was it strange.
As far as Immortal Iron Fist goes, this whole 3099 thing is way out of the ordinary. I may not know much about Duane Swierczynski but somehow, he managed to pull this issue off and work it to be extremely cool. Being based in the future always makes me skeptical for some comics, but this being so damn far in the future I really can’t argue with what occurs in this issue outside of how out-of-nowhere-awesome it is.

I went and saw The Spirit on Saturday. Yes, I saw it despite the terrible reviews and horrendous score on Rotten Tomatoes (because I trust the collective movie reviewers over individual reviewers and it was at 17% when I left to see the movie).
It is now about 23 hours after seeing that movie (as I write this) and my views of the film have not changed.
I knew before going into the movie that it was going to be outrageous, we all knew that. I knew there’d be a huge Sin City feel to it that we all wanted but still didn’t want to see. I knew that this was Frank Miller‘s first solo movie as a writer and director. I knew that Miller’s previous movies written for the screen were Robocop 2 and 3–both I didn’t see but have heard were terrible.
So I went into this movie with pretty low expectations, I’m not going to lie. But despite all of the badness The Spirit had from everyone else I saw the film and, well, I kind of liked it.
**spoilers abound**

Proof #2 picks up right after… well right after Proof #1. Heh. This issue starts off with our super cute Ginger Brown going through The Lodge’s orientation program. Wayne Russet rescues her from the boring movies and decides to give her a tour of The Lodge, a good reason to introduce Ginger/readers, to The Habitat. This is where endangered cryptids are kept and it’s a pretty sweet place. Passenger pigeons, dodo’s, fairies, jackalopes, and gnomes are just a few of the exotic species living in there.
The Habitat also holds a curious cryptid named the Dover Demon. This little guy is interesting because while he is an actual character he has the ability to tell the future so he’s also a really inventive plot point, setting up stories possibly years in advance. Pay attention to what the guy has to say, it could be important. Also, the fairies? Not cute little fairies, oh no, they look like naked Wicked Witches of the West with razor sharp teeth. Little flying piranhas with permanent PMS. They seem like they’re going to be the center of a big story arc in the future. Keep an eye on them too.

I have a major soft spot for mythical beasts in comic books (Batman/Superman vs. Werewolves and Vampires, can you say heaven? Astounding Wolf-Man, Yeti vs. Vampire) and this review will focus on Proof #1. Proof is about a Sasquatch (drools), John Prufrock, who hunts mythical creatures (waterfall of drool) for the United States government. For those of you who actually read Proof I am well aware that issue #14 is on the newsstands, I just can’t stand starting from the middle when I have every issue.
Proof #1 is an issue that seems to suffer from a sort of controlled chaos. The issue is split into two parts, the first introduces you to John Prufrock or Proof, a sasquatch who works for the Lodge, a special government organization that is funded by both the United States and Canadian governments. The second part of the issue is back-story, chronicling the events that lead Ginger Brown, a cute little FBI agent, to the Lodge and her new partner, Proof. My biggest problem with this issue is that it was split into these two different parts and while it wasn’t too difficult to follow or understand, it could have been done differently.

First off, while this is my first review and I would like to get started on the right foot, I am shocked and appalled that no one has been reviewing Hellboy, and no, the movie does not count. Shame on you all. Go start reading Hellboy, B.P.R.D., and Lobster Johnson stuff. Trust me, it’s all really good.
In Hellboy “The Wild Hunt,” our favorite stone handed demon gets an invitation from a mysterious organization, The Osiris Club (what are these folk’s deal anyway? For fans think back to The Right Hand of Doom – The Nature of the Beast) to join in a giant hunt. Not like a hunt that is large because there are lots of people participating. No, these people will be hunting giants. My first thought was “awesome,” but to be totally honest my favorite part of this issue was what I have come to love in every Hellboy issue: Hellboy’s matter-of-fact attitude when dealing with anything supernatural. When formally asked to join the Wild Hunt, an honor that only few participate in, he responds in typical Hellboy fashion, “sure, why not?”

So a few weeks back Erika referred a nice guy named Ben Chabala to our site. He was such a bad ass that he got ahold of me and asked if he could write for us.
After he sent me a review of the first issue of Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, Nick and I both agreed that we had to bring this guy on to our staff.
Look for a bio of Ben and his first review of Hellboy: The Wild Hunt #1 very soon!

In Case You’re Just Joining Us: Tony Stark just got served.
I know I can’t shut up about Matt Fraction and Salvador LaRocca’s run on “Invincible Iron Man”, but as long as this creative team keeps knocking it out of the park, I’m gonna let you all know about it.

I knew beforehand that this series was going to be fantastic. I mean, if Marvel knows how to do one thing right, it’s put great writers on comics that are dark. Case and point being this first issue of Spider-Man Noir (also, X-Men Noir was fucking fantastic). Written by David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky this issue really blew me away with it’s early 1930s adaptation of the infamous Spider-Man.
Although a lot of this issue didn’t focus on Spider-Man or even Peter Parker, it’s a great beginning to what I feel is an incredible world of noir comics that Marvel is starting.
This month, you’re in for a treat kiddies. I promise you.
