post Happy Thanksgiving

November 27th, 2008

Filed under: randomNick Nelson @ 5:04 pm

From all of us here at DestroyTheCyb.org, I just wanted to wish everyone in the US a very happy Thanksgiving. Whether you are spending time at home or traveling great distances to be with your loved ones, have a safe and fun holiday weekend. Expect the posts to be somewhat slow this weekend as our staff enjoys family time (including Uncle Joe passing out on the couch after 5 glasses of wine) and recovers from our own stuffing of our collective faces. We’ll return to our regularly scheduled madness on Monday. Enjoy the weekend!

Two grown men playing 52 card pickup

I’m a big Marvel fan, though you wouldn’t know it by my previous DC based reviews.

Moon Knight #24 came out last week, guest starring the Thunderbolts; I’ve been a T-Bolts follower since their inception, and I really like their current line-up and story line, so I figured “Let’s give Moon Knight a shot!”

Gentle reader, I warn and beg you! Please learn from these, my mistakes.

Please proceed to read on after the break.

Batman #681 Cover

Well, folks, for us Americans, Thursday marks a very momentous holiday: Thanksgiving. Really, it screams what the US is all about. Eating a lot of food and then falling asleep watching football. But it is also the time to spend with family and catch up. And when you get sick of that, you’ll be happy that you bought a ton of comics this week to read instead of talking with Aunt Karen (seriously, I have an Aunt Karen and she’s really weird).

If you’re still behind from the last couple of weeks (I know I am!), this might be a good catch up week. There’s a few gems to look forward to, but still a relatively slow week. This week, I’ve got the death of Batman, the end of some Secret Invasion tie-ins, and the beginnings of the end of the Ultimate X-Men for you. So stick around and see what these 4 titles have in store for you.

In this world, only one man can satisfy me the way Robert Kirkman does… wait, that sounds really weird (then again I have been known to confess my love for Brian Reed before, so whatever)… but anyways, this month’s Invincible kicks ass as much as any other Invincible, but this month we get to see more of everyone’s favorite Invincible character: Allen the Alien! Yeah!

If you don’t know what’s going on in Invincible, this review is not for you, but if you do… wowzer. We’ll continue after the break, but let me tell you… this issue ends with one sweet revelation.

post Batman: Cacophony #1

November 24th, 2008

Filed under: Batman: Cacophony, Review, batmanJake Cole @ 9:00 am

Comic book fans are well acquainted with Kevin Smith. His films “Mallrats” and “Chasing Amy” contained oodles of great riffs on classic characters, and just about every year he stops in for wildly popular Q&A’s at the San Diego Comic-Con.

In 1998, Joe Quesada hired him to revive Daredevil, resulting in a popular run that re-established the character and led to mammoth, defining runs from Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker and opening the doors to let Hollywood writers such as Joss Whedon and J. Michael Straczynski to get runs on major comic characters. After acclaimed runs on Daredevil and Green Arrow, Smith became notorious for delays on his other comic book projects, one of which was delayed so long after only its first issue that it was finally canceled years later. But hot of the heels of one of his finest movies, Smith is back in the comic book world with a promising new miniseries, Batman: Cacophony.

When Last We Left Our Hero:

The Flash’s Powers are killing him. His wife, Linda, was attacked by a swarm of bees. ALIEN bees. She’s at death’s door.

Full disclosure: The Flash is my absolute favorite superhero, no question. It doesn’t matter who’s wearing the costume; matter of fact, the generational nature of the comic has been one of its great strengths as far as I’m concerned. Also, from the early 90s to about two years ago, the title has been a breeding ground for the best writers (Waid, Johns) and artists (Carlos Pacheco, Scott Kolins, Ethan Van Sciver, the late Mike Wieringo) in the field.

So what happened? (more…)

First and foremost here today folks, let us all thank the mighty gods of comic books for slapping Marvel across the face in a very forceful manner in which caused them to bring back the (pardon my French) fucking incredible art of Valentine De Landro.

Secondly, issues such as this one are the reason I love X-Factor. Peter David has had me craving more and more of this series since day one, and lucky for us, we haven’t had any delays or problems with the series (minus the previous couple of issues that featured some of the worst art I have ever seen in a comic book).

This month is chalked full of X-Factor goodness, drama and laughs. After the break we can divulge more into that. (watch for spoilers)

Fantastic Four #561 Cover

Wrapping up their second arc of their soon-to-be-legendary run on Fantastic Four, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch released issue 561 of Fantastic Four this week. And let me tell you, as expected, they finished things off with a bang. If you’ve been reading this blog long enough, you know I have a serious passion for this creative team’s run on this book. They are doing an outstanding job and I really hope they never leave (though, I know they will).

You may recall that we are finishing off the Death of the Invisible Woman arc this month. You also may remember that last month, we were left with the shocking realization that the Richards’ new nanny is none other than Sue Richards herself, from the future. On top of this, we find out that this group of time-traveling “superheroes”, known as the New Defenders, plan to use Johnny Storm and Doctor Doom to power an inert Galactus to bring all 8 billion people from the future to the present. Damn. How will this all end? Well, you will have to pick up the issue to find out, but hit the break and I’ll tell you if this issue is worth buying (hint: it is!).

post Project Super Powers: Black Terror #1

November 20th, 2008

Filed under: Project Super Powers, Reviewshawn @ 9:35 am

I think the narrator best describes how I feel about anything Project Superpowers near the beginning of Black Terror #1,” What he feels now is nothing. NOTHING,” because that is how I feel about Project Superpowers.

Let’s rewind a bit. Project Super Powers is the child of Alex Ross and Jim Krueger. Since most publishing companies NEED to have a “Super Hero” universe Dynamite Entertainment brought them into to the picture to take public domain characters from Fox Comics and Crestwood Productions and sculpt them into the Super Heroes.

How do they bring these golden age heroes into the light of today? by a contrived plot device which left all of the worlds super heroes (save two, The Fighting Yank & the Green Lama) trapped in Pandora’s Box after Hitler released all of it’s evil out into the world.

But we can continue this after the break. (more…)
