If you’re the type of person who just can’t help but love reviews on the fly, say no more and continue reading. This week’s Twist-offs are teeny tiny, but please bear with me…
And let’s begin… (spoilers and funnery–like gunnery but with less bullets and more fun/swearing–after the break.)

 Supergirl #34 Cover
Wow. It’s October already. it feels like just yesterday we were in the middle of July and I was writing about comic book solicitations for this month. And now it is here. For many of us here at DestroyTheCyb.org, classes are in full swing. For me, midterms are already starting next week. Where did this year go? Unfortunately, with more school comes less time for comics. I got way behind last week and here it is Tuesday and I still haven’t finished reading everything from last week.
Luckily, things slow down this week and we all get a little time to catch up. Unfortunately, slow week means not as many good reads. Still, I managed to pick out 4 little gems (from 3 different publishers, no less!). We got a new arc in one of my Marvel favs, a second issue in a really cool Marvel mini-series, a new direction for one of my DC guilty pleasures and my indie pick from one of the biggest names in comics. Don’t go anywhere, weekly previews coming at ya!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, as hard as we all here at DestroyTheCyb.org have been, we can never turn down new writers and with that said, we’ve added a new writer to our ranks: Andrew Kovatch!
Andrew is a friend of Erika’s and is a fan of both DC and Marvel. Overall, he’s a super dude (not to be confused with Superman).
His first review (Batman: Year One) will be out soon, so keep an eye out for it.

Some of you may be visiting the site today, expecting to see my Rapid Reviews for the week. I am sorry to disappoint, but I still haven’t finished all the comics from last week. The massive amount of releases combined with my busy school schedule and my total laziness led to falling behind. Luckily, this week there aren’t very many comics on my list, so I should catch up.
So, just to keep you entertained today before I do my weekly previews tonight, I thought I would post a little something personal. I’ve been reading the fabulous Fantastic Fangirls blog recently and got some inspiration. They have been writing their origin stories into comics as the first posts and I thought this was a great idea. Now, I could never hope to write as well as they do and I don’t really want to rip them off completely, so I am going to do my own little spin on this concept. I want to tell you why I read and love comics, and maybe a little more about myself.

 Captain America #42 Cover
Since issue #26 of Captain America, we have been deep within the epic Death of Captain America mega-arc. Covering three parts and 18 issues, Ed Brubaker has crafted one of the greatest comic book stories of the modern generation. This month, The Death of Captain America comes to a close and firmly plants Bucky as the new Captain America. You can think of this issue as finally closing the era of Steve Rogers, as sad as that may be.
Last month, you may remember, Captain America saved third-party candidate Gordon Wright from being assassinated by the Red Skull’s daughter, Sin. And of course, Sharon Carter is trying to escape from the Skull’s clutches. All the while, Falcon and Black Widow are coming to rescue Carter.
It is all very epic and I’ll review this final chapter in The Death of Captain America after the break.

.jpg) Runaways Vol. 1: Pride & Joy
Brian K. Vaughan has always been known to tackle controversial topics. Y: The Last Man commented on gender roles in society while Ex Machina (which I will write a review for soon) explored gay marriage and educational funding. In Runaways, the topic is less controversial, as to make the comic accessible, but never lacks in depth or focus. In fact, Vaughan’s commentary on the generation gap effectively illustrates conflicting moral issues and rebellion.
Runaways is, as you’d expect, a comic about a group of runaway kids, varying in age from about 12 to 17. There are six of them in all – Nico Minoru, Alex Wilder, Karolina Dean, Gertrude Yorkes, Chase Stein and Molly Hayes.

 Dead Ahead #1 Cover
Many of you may remember that in my weekly previews post, I marked Dead Ahead #1 as my “Indie pick of the week”. I picked up this issue at my local comic book shop this week and after reading, I am ready to give you guys the low down on this brand new limited series from Image.
Let’s talk a bit about the story first. Dead Ahead tells the story of a group of fishermen who, while out at sea, find out that some sort of outbreak has occurred on the mainland and people have started eating other people. Sounds like a classic tale of zombies. When the Coast Guard tells our protagonists that they can’t return to shore, they are forced to wander the high seas. The rest of the issue deals with this, and lots of zombies, of course.
Check out my full review below.

 Ms. Marvel #31 cover
Just like a few other titles, Ms. Marvel is out of Secret Invasion. As cool as Ms. Marvel’s tie-in was, I was ready for it to be done. But now, I don’t know where we are.
This month’s issue came straight out of no where. It’s got old-school references to things I don’t even understand and there are crazy plot twists that could be coming out of Secret Invasion and we don’t even know when this issue takes place and really that could change a lot of things!
So let’s proceed and after the jump, I’ll go into a bit more detail.

 Ultimates 3 #5 Cover
I wrote a rant/review of Ultimates a few months back, in which I stated that I believed that people were not giving Jeph Loeb enough credit. I said then that people were knocking on him because he is not Mark Millar, who wrote the Ultimates so beautifully. I actually liked the first 4 issues of Ultimates 3. And somewhere in the months and months and months of delays between 4 and 5, this series went to shit.
In the last issue (don’t ask me how I remember this. I had to back track about 3 issues to remember what the fuck was going on), Magneto took the body of his daughter, the Scarlet Witch, back to the Savage Land with him. Half the Ultimates went to go retrieve the body while the rest stayed in NYC to figure out who shot her. In the process of doing so, they found out Hank Pym is creating robot replicas of all the Ultimates.
After the break, I say “WTF Jeph Loeb!?!?!?” a whole lot.

For the few of you paying attention/giving a damn, so far all the Classics Corner reviews have been about DC books. I’ll admit, I prefer DC. This is not to say I dislike Marvel, though. Marvel has the ability to sustain a character for years, creating not just strong story arcs but strong runs, some of which go on for over a decade. It’s just easier for someone getting into comics to stick with short bursts of brilliance rather than, say, Brubaker’s entire Captain America run.
Considered the greatest X-Men story ever told and the peak of Chris Claremont’s record 16-year run on Uncanny X-Men, The Dark Phoenix Saga is a landmark in comic books and one of the most influential stories ever told in the medium. It’s an incredibly moving tale that incorporates personal tragedy, epic action, and strong characterizations of the entire X-Men team and not just one or two members. However, it’s not without flaws.
