post Wolverine #67 Review

July 31st, 2008

Filed under: Review, WolverineNick Nelson @ 6:57 pm

Another month and another Wolverine comic. As I previewed on Tuesday, this is the second issue of the Old Man Logan arc by Mark Millar and, as expected, this is a great comic. I continue to be impressed by Millar’s ability to create a complex and deep story, and yet make it interesting to read.

Despite the extra wait for reasons that I don’t know and my need to read this comic this month, I endured the wait and didn’t pull the hair out of my head. Lucky for me, the wait was well worth it and I was able to recover some of my sanity after turning the pages of this issue.

post Skaar: Son of Hulk #2 Review

July 31st, 2008

Filed under: Review, Skaar: Son of HulkNick Nelson @ 8:45 am

One of the new books that really surprised me last month was Skaar: Son of Hulk. The first issue of that book really blew me away and I was really looking forward to the ongoing series. Unfortunately, the second issue that was released this week does not hold up to the same amazing standards as the first.

If you are new to Skaar, the basic premise of the book spins directly out of the events of Planet Hulk. Those of you who read Planet Hulk will remember our green friend getting it on with Caiera the Oldstrong (perhaps only a female with Oldstrong powers can take on the Hulk) on Sakaar. She got pregnant and all seemed to be looking up for Hulk, until his ship blew up and destroyed the capital city, killing Caiera in the process. Very emotional moment; I would recommend reading Planet Hulk if you haven’t. Hulk thought that his unborn son was killed in the process, but little did he know, Skaar survived and was somehow born out of a radioactive swamp or something (the comic never really explains that very well, so I just let it go). After the break, I’ll review this issue and tell you why I think this book is going down hill really fast.

post True Believers review — it was simply incredible

July 30th, 2008

Filed under: Review, spoilers, true believersMike Rapin @ 9:30 pm

Are you a blogger? Have you ever blogged? Well, then I believe that True Believers #1 (titled “Payback is a Bitch” which is just funny for reasons you’ll see if you read on) from Marvel comics would be just right for you. The story of underground bloggers who are dead-set at taking a stab at karmic justice by uncovering the ununcoverable stories and then blogging about it from their ‘untraceable proxy server’ debuts this month and it was nothing short of spectacular.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this title, as I don’t think it was highly promoted, but I was simply amazed at how great of a first issue True Believers #1 was and for that reason I highly recommend it.

post Next Avengers, direct-to-DVD is okay by me

July 29th, 2008

If you don’t know, I’m a huge fan of the Ultimate universe and when the Ultimate Avengers movies came out, I went out and bought them and watched them. Of course, they are kid-centric so the story is a tad watered down, but I still enjoyed both of the movies. They made me giggle as to how spot on they were at times in the first movie and how much of Mark Millar’s story they didn’t change. Steve Rogers (Captain America) was clean cut, Hank Pym (Giant/Ant Man) had anger issues, Tony Stark (Iron Man) was a drunk and blah blah blah it was all effing good. The second movie moved into a whole different story but it was all done very well. I loved it.

Now, after 2 movies, a new brand of a movie is coming out: Next Avengers: Heroes Of Tomorrow. The premise of the movie: When the world is in peril, it calls on Earth’s mightiest heroes: The Avengers. But in the future with all of the Avengers gone, who does the world call on?

More after the break.

post Weekly Comic Previews: July 30, 2008

July 29th, 2008

It’s that time of the week again when I tell you what to look forward to at your local comic shop (or at least what I am looking forward to. You can do whatever you want). Some interesting stuff this week, including Wolverine as an old man, a one-shot featuring Newuniversal, and those little kids with the big punch, The Power Pack, fighting some Skrulls. Here we go, comic previews coming at ya!

Wolverine #67

It’s been awhile since I talked about the Old Man Logan arc by Mark Millar that is going on in Wolverine right now, but let me say, it is still awesome and it IS finally coming out this week. It’s been over a month and this book as been delayed a couple of weeks, but trust me, it is going to be worth the wait. If you don’t remember (or didn’t read it; shame on you!), Old Man Logan takes place in the future with a - you guessed it - older Logan. Last month, we found out he was having money problems, was being bullied by Bruce Banner’s kids and goes on a road trip with a blind Hawkeye (ironic, I know) to deliver a package to the east coast to get money for rent. Two reasons why this book is awesome, if you couldn’t guess from the above description: Mark Millar is writing it and Steve McNiven is penciling it. Good enough reason for me to pick up a book.

post Neil Gaiman to Write Batman

July 28th, 2008

Filed under: batmanNick Nelson @ 10:38 pm

I had planned to write a post reviewing Grant Morrison’s New X-Men from the early 2000s, but unfortunately, I failed to finish those over the weekend, due to many factors. Hopefully I will have that review up soon. But I still wanted to get a post out tonight, so I thought I would talk about the news story I am most excited about coming out of Comic-Con International in San Diego: Neil Gaiman is taking the reigns on Batman starting in January.

There are several reasons why this is huge news. First, I love Neil Gaiman with a passion. Not even joking, I worship the man’s books. American Gods is probably one of the best novels I have ever read. On top of that, he has, in my opinion, single-handedly redefined the fantasy literature genre. On top of that, he has written some of the most critically acclaimed comic books. Sandman is still considered a great comic book and I haven’t met too many people who didn’t love Marvel 1602. I have only read Marvel 1602 as far as comic books by him, but I have to say I was blown away.

Simply put, I am excited to see what he can bring to Batman. The 2 part story that Gaiman writes will spin directly out of the Batman R.I.P. arc from Grant Morrison, but will also apparently herald back to Batman from the early days, like a retrospective of the character.

Oh yeah, did I mention that Gaiman’s partner from 1602, Andy Kubert is going to be penciling the issues? Oh yeah, he is. So there is even more reason to be excited.

It sounds like Gaiman’s arc will not require too much knowledge of the current goings-on in Batman, so even those who are not currently reading about The Dark Knight should be able to pick the issues up with no problem. After his work, Grant Morrison will pick back up the pencil for Batman and continue on with his master plan for Batman.

You can be assured that I will be picking the books up and I will review them for you right here. So look for my reviews of Neil Gaiman’s work on Batman coming this January to a computer screen near you. Until then, stay tuned to DestroyTheCyb.org for more news about your favorite comics!

post Watchmen the comic is so amazing but Watchmen the movie is iffy (part 1)

July 28th, 2008

Filed under: Rant, watchmenMike Rapin @ 10:18 pm

I just got through issue #5 a few minutes ago of Watchmen and my mind is going crazy with everything. I know this is an older comic, but as I said before, it’s something I’ve been meaning to read for a long while and I’m really glad I started today.

I don’t think I need to explain the plot, because really you need to go out and read this some way or some how if you’re interested. Alan Moore’s genius spans generations and probably dimensions. And yes, this is just more and more praise to an already infamous and critically acclaimed graphic novel/series but hot-dog-diggity damn is it good.

post Uncanny X-Men #500 review

July 25th, 2008

Filed under: Review, spoilers, uncanny x-menJeff Lanning @ 3:52 pm

Well I just read Uncanny X-Men #500 and Brubraker and Fraction never cease to amaze me. That team up is got to be the best writer team out there. It all started with Immortal Iron Fist. Those two revolutionized the boring stagnate character of Danny Rand and made him an accessible flawed character of the 21st century and I have a feeling they are going to make their run in Uncanny X-Men unforgettable.

With cover art by the great painter Alex Ross (Marvels) this is a “can’t lose” book. The art for this issue is by Greg Land and Terry Dodson. In my opinion, Greg Land has got to be one of the most underrated artists in the business. This guy drew Ultimate Fantastic Four with Mark Millar. He covered, my favorite arc of the series: Tomb of Namor. I love this guy’s art and I really think you will too.

Back to the comic. Uncanny X-Men #500 was a double, 40 page issue with 2 prologues and 2 epilogues. A doozie of a story. It starts off with the mutants moving to San Fransisco where they are accepted. That really makes sense in that city. Granted I have never been there but I feel like anyone and everyone is welcome there.

post Avengers: The Initiative #15 Review

July 25th, 2008

Filed under: Avengers: The Initiative, ReviewNick Nelson @ 3:31 pm

Ummm, hi… when did Avengers: The Initiative suddenly get really freakin’ awesome? Oh, that’s right, this week. I have been reading The Initiative from the beginning to various reactions. Most months it is “that was pretty good” and some months it is “meh, that was just ok.” I have yet to be really blown away by the series. That isn’t to say that the writing and art isn’t good, cause it is. The problem is that you really don’t get to care about the characters, so the depth of character isn’t really there and the fighting kind of lacks, so there isn’t much action to get you into the book either. What results is a usually slow moving tale about the training of these young recruits.

That completely changed in The Initiative #15.

post Immortal Iron Fist #17 review

July 25th, 2008

Filed under: Immortal Iron fist, Review, spoilersMike Rapin @ 1:24 am

I’ve been reading Immortal Iron Fist since the current series began and I have dug it a lot. It’s probably one of my favorite series right now (next to X-Factor and Invincible) and this week I was just blown away.

Given that Matt Fraction ended his run with issue #16–which I was dumb and somehow didn’t realize–I was a tad skeptical at how this new arc was going to take off. Lucky for me, it ended up being fucking amazing and it seriously blew my mind. From what I’ve been hearing from Comic Con in San Diego, Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker (who co-wrote the first 16 issues together) are saying their series is going to look lame compared to what is coming from Duane Swierczynski in the near future… Really with one issue in I can already see it getting amazing. (Although, I loved the tournament from Fraction and Brubakers run).
