Chicago Comic-Con: Mondo Marvel panel
August 8th, 2009 -- mini-url
Hey everyone, Mike here reporting from Chicago. Nick and I covered some panels today, so look out for his DC Nation post sometime soon.
Today, though, I hit up the Mondo Marvel panel featuring Jim McCann, Mark Paniccia, Dan Slott, Jason Aaron, Sean McKeever, Chris Yost and Craig Kyle. There was a little bit of information at this panel, just a bit more than the Ultimate’s panel, but nonetheless it was informative. I took notes on my iPhone so if I missed some small stuff, I’m sorry.
The convention covered a bunch of things, but I’ll just spit it to you as I got it:
Dan Slott featured a teaser for his arc that will be coming up in Amazing Spider-Man featuring none other than Mysterio! (But I thought he was dead?! Oh wait, this is Marvel mwhahaha). This should be showing up around issues #618 or #619.
Paul Toben and Patrick Scherberger will be putting out a 4 issue limited series called Spider-Man and the Secret Wars–yeah, from way back then–which will cover a bit of retelling of Spider-Man’s place in Secret Wars and his view of things.
More after the break
Jeff Parker will be taking over Thunderbolts soon which is going to feature a story about Norman Osborn vs Songbird plus some of the original Thunderbolts. The guys at Marvel were super excited about this story arc.
The new arc in Incredible Hercules in November is called “Assault On New Olympus.” The Agents Of Atlas will be involved and apparently this is going to be a good jumping on point for new readers. Another story arc the Marvel guys were super excited about.
My notes said this: “new avengers ronin will be crazy yo.” Which is in reference to a sweet ass Annual coming up (#3) of New Avengers called “Women Strike Back” that will be featuring all of the women of New Avengers (Ronin included) kicking ass.
Dark Avengers Annual #1 called “The Fate Of Captain Marvel” should be a “huge turning point for Captain Marvel” in the Dark Avengers.
In November, the new arc of Invincible Iron Man is coming and the Marvel crew was really excited–especially Dan Slott. The arc is called “Stark Disassembled.” Slott went on to explain that the ideas in this arc were some of the ideas that Matt Fraction had pitched originally for this series. McCann went on further to say that this “will forever alter Iron Man.” They all joked that Marvel says things in hyperbole, but that this case was going to be very true. “This will be seriously game changing.”
They had a moment focused on Cosmic stuff in the Marvel U–I kind of zoned out for this and missed a joke about Rocket Raccoon–but I did catch this: With the ending of War Of Kings these things go on: an explosive ending, a family mourns, a new realm of kings forms (with a bitchen’ ass picture of Gladiator and apparently a new kingdom rises), and a War Of Kings: Who Will Rule? one-shot are all coming. There will be a 5-issue mini-series about the Inhumans, and a Realm Of Kings 5-issue mini-series. All of this will be told by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, so, as Jim McCann said, it should be super consistent.
Craig Kyle and Chris Yost had a moment to talk about some of their X-Force stuff. There will be “an aftermath of saving kids,” and there’s a building towards Celene and some bad stuff is going down (my notes were terrible, sorry). Their point in the upcoming issues will be to bring back some of the old X-Universe as Celene brings back the dead. Also, they explained that since Wolverine and Cyclops haven’t talked since X-Force has come back to the current time, there will definitely be a “talk” of sorts.
Sean McKeever had a bit to speak as well and he started talking about his upcoming mini-series in September called Nomad: Girl Without A World. Some of you may have seen teasers for in recent comics. The story revolves around a girl Bucky from the world of Onslaught. Nomad comes to the 616 universe and is confused and must find her place in the 616 universe.
Jason Aaron got a second to talk too. He spoke about his upcoming one-shot in the Dark Reign: The List line of comics. His is focused around Wolverine. The story will be Wolverine vs. Norman Osborn. Aaron explained that he is playing with his favorite Grant Morrison characters, especially Fantomex. The issue will touch on the Weapon Plus area of Morrison’s New X-Men and it looks like Marvel Boy will be showing up in this issue as well.
Then came Dan Slott. Boy he had a bit to say. He’s obviously working on Amazing Spider-Man and is super excited about what’s to come in the next bunch of issues as Spider-Man goes through what he called “The Gauntlet.” Apparently Spider-Man will be facing a huge list of foes from his past and it will all lead up to a monster confrontation. On a side note, Slott explained that a “Spidey beats down Norman” story is building as well, but he may have been joking. He then moved on to Mighty Avengers and talked about a huge event that is coming up where all Avengers titles will be tied in to and it all goes to a big “thing” that he couldn’t talk about. To be more specific “Mighty Avengers 30, page 10 will have the ‘thing.’”
Mark Paniccia talked about X-Men Forever that is aimed at giving back some nostalgia to old readers. A huge revelation will be coming at issue 5 and the definition of being a mutant will change forever… A side story in issue six will be about the sentinels and a funeral for Wolverine will be in issue 10. There’s also a followup to what Colossus is up to in issue 11. Not really my thing, but if you like them old comics, I’d say keep buying X-Men Forever.
At the end of the news, Dan Slott had to plug Johnathon Hickman’s Fantastic Four because it’s that good apparently.
ON TO THE Q&A!
This was a tad boring and I didn’t taken notes on the questions I deemed “dumb” ie. “What’s Mother Gaea’s role in the Marvel U now that Ragnarok happened?”. Sometimes I just don’t care for intense-detail questions like that. These aren’t exact quotes, but you should get the idea.
Anyways…
Marvel Man? What does Marvel own?
McCann answered that Marvel Man and Miracle Man are now owned by Marvel, but he has no idea what they own.
Are we going to see more Silver Surfer?
McCann: So would I. Maaaaybe.
Paniccia: People are thinking about it
Are we going to see the X-Men who have been with the Star Jammers back on Earth since War Of Kings is done?
McCann: ……
What’s one thing we can know about The Mighty Avengers?
Slott: Since we have Loki and Scarlett Witch, watch out for a hammer wielding hero (aka THOR)
Is She-Hulk going to die? What’s up with red She-Hulk?
Paniccia: Basically Red She Hulk will show up and “ramifications” will happen to 2 of the 3 She-Hulks. [I had no idea what was going on]
Blob vs. Juggernaut, who would win?
McCann: Ben & Jerry’s [much laughter]
Yost: Juggernaut
Then there were 2 bad questions about how to become a writer and something lame about gods that wasted time…
LET IT BE KNOWN, for Dan Slott’s sake, THAT ONLY ONE PERSON BOOED BRAND NEW DAY WHEN IT WAS MENTIONED BY A FAN.
Why kick Spider-Man while he’s down? I know he’s a down-trodden character, but still?
Slott: Don’t worry…
Since Dr. Strange is no longer the Sorcerer Supreme… what now?
McCann: Mark Waid is covering this is his mini-series called Strange.
Sankovitch: Rick Remender will be writing an ongoing Brother Voodoo series that will cover some of this as well [called Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural]
Young X-Men sucked, what’s up with the characters from that series?
Yost: See X-Force and the upcoming arc “Necrosia”
Are we going to see more Deadpool in X-Force?
Kyle: We’re probably going to feature him more.
Is there some kind of wall or Wiki page for all of the Marvel U to see who did what and when?
McCann: That’s [Tom] Brevoort
Paniccia: We’re doing that for the Ultimate universe and the Noir universe simply because they’re so young.
Are we ever going to go back to a “normal” universe? Like where Spider-Man is fighting Mysterio and that’s it, no cross-overs.
McCann: Sort of? We’re a shared universe so it’s tough [He had a much longer explanation about how events are hard to get out of and start and more BS about how this ISN'T about selling more comics because sometimes people don't opt-into the events although personally, I feel lots of comics are forced into events despite the writer's views (ie. J. Michael Straczynski)]
One final thing (imposed by a question I didn’t write out): Jason Aaron is doing a Punisher MAX series with Steve Dillon as artist.
And that was the panel. Feel free to yell and complain and be excited via comment.
