Ultimates 3 #5 Cover

I wrote a rant/review of Ultimates a few months back, in which I stated that I believed that people were not giving Jeph Loeb enough credit. I said then that people were knocking on him because he is not Mark Millar, who wrote the Ultimates so beautifully. I actually liked the first 4 issues of Ultimates 3. And somewhere in the months and months and months of delays between 4 and 5, this series went to shit.

In the last issue (don’t ask me how I remember this. I had to back track about 3 issues to remember what the fuck was going on), Magneto took the body of his daughter, the Scarlet Witch, back to the Savage Land with him. Half the Ultimates went to go retrieve the body while the rest stayed in NYC to figure out who shot her. In the process of doing so, they found out Hank Pym is creating robot replicas of all the Ultimates.

After the break, I say “WTF Jeph Loeb!?!?!?” a whole lot.

Daredevil #111 Cover

Daredevil #111 Cover

Like with my rapid reviews, I am going to skip the long intros and just get right to the meat of the post. Ladies and gentlemen, your weekly previews start now!

Daredevil #111

Is it possible for Ed Brubaker to be any cooler? I don’t really think so, and this month, he is introducing a brand new villain to the Marvel universe: Lady Bullseye. I know you may be think that it sounds kind of lame, like Supergirl or Spider-Girl or any of the many other female equivalents to our favorite heroes (for the record, I actually think that the female counterparts are very cool and interesting, but their names are pretty unoriginal). But this is untrue. Brubaker has crafted an all new character that apparently has a very deep and intricate past, which he will explore in the next arc of Daredevil, as he continues to make that one of the best Marvel books.

More previews after the break!

NYX: No Way Home #1 Cover

NYX: No Way Home #1 Cover

Welcome back to another edition of my Weekly Previews, where I feature the best of what is coming out this week. There are a ton of releases this week and I hope you are excited to get to reading. Topping the bill this week is NYX: No Way Home #1. There is also the return of 2 long delayed series: Ultimates 3 and Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas. And finally, there is a new arc starting in one of my favorite series, Cable. So stick around for a quick rundown of why these are awesome comics to pick up this week, and maybe a short recap of previous issues.

NYX: No Way Home #1

Making a triumphant return is NYX (full review here), the gritty, street version of X-Men. This is the continuation of a 7-issue run written by Marvel’s own Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada. This series was so well done, with great story and action, but has a bad memory in a lot of people’s mind due to long delays. However, the series is back, with new writer Marjorie Liu, who will hopefully get this out on a regular basis. The series is only scheduled for a 6-issue run, but if it does well, maybe Marvel will bring it back for longer at some point.

post Ultimates 3 - A Review (Minor Spoilers)

July 7th, 2008

Filed under: Rant, UltimatesNick Nelson @ 4:26 pm

I finally gave in and decided to break out of reading the Ultimate universe in trade paperbacks borrowed from Mike Rapin and start reading the Ultimate titles as the come out. There are several reasons for this. First, I really want to read Ultimatum when it comes out and will need to be caught up for that. Second, I am reading Ultimate Spider-Man monthly, so I don’t want to be too far ahead in that, but behind in the rest of the series. Finally, I really enjoy the Ultimate books and want to be able to read them as fast as possible. I’m just that kind of person. In my journey to catch up, I read the first four issues of Ultimates 3. I have heard that the series has really taken a slide in quality in the 3rd volume. I am not so sure. My reaction to the first 4 issues after the break. May contain some spoilers. You have been warned.
