 Green Lantern Corps #29 Cover
Having previously read a bit of Green Lantern (specifically Green Lantern: Rebirth, a bit of Sinestro Corps War and most recently Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns) I decided to catch up with the Corps by starting with issue #29, part one of Sins of the Star Sapphire.
Peter Tomasi’s series serves as a perfect compliment to the Green Lantern proper, and is arguably better than the latter. Combined with Patrick Gleason’s expressive artwork, Green Lantern Corps is a must read for any Green Lantern reader, and #29 is a perfect place to start.

 Amazing Spider-Man #575 cover
This week wasn’t too huge for me, but I had one comic I was really looking forward to: Amazing Spider-Man #576. Now, I meant to write a review for #575 but… well, it just didn’t happen. Nevertheless, these last two issues were utterly fantastic and I’ll go and sum things up in a moment.
Writer Joe Kelly entered the Spider-Man brain trust last week beginning his two-part series, “Family Ties.” Focusing around Hammerhead and the aftermath of him being saved by Mr. Negative this mini-arc is building more and more of the sub-plot that is Mr. Negative (yea, I know all ASM is doing lately is building, but bear with me).
But let’s get into things after the jump and I’ll give you the run down.

 Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 cover
In case you didn’t read Brian Reed’s awesome mini-series Secret Invasion: Amazing Spider-Man, you won’t know that it was all about the new and seemingly familiar Jackpot of created in Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This year (or whatever time is between annuals), the Amazing Spider-Man Annual is focused on the one and only Jackpot and boy oh-effing-boy is it damn crazy.
Why? Because you finally find out who Jackpot is. You do. It’s quite a story… Thanks to good ol’ McGuggs…
BUT, before I give anything away, let’s take a jump and I’ll splurge all sorts of details…

 Amazing Spider-Man #574 cover
I may not be the biggest Spider-Man fan or expert on the planet, but I know who Flash Thompson is. I knew Flash Thompson to be the bully of a certain nerd we all know and love to be Peter Parker, and that’s why I was shaky to buy this week’s issue of Amazing Spider-Man. What I didn’t know was tidbits of Spider-Man’s past where this former bully from school became one of Peter’s closest friends, was a huge fan of Spider-Man, and that that same bully went off to war to fight some years ago.
This week’s issue of Amazing Spider-Man focuses on that character for a full issue: Flash Thompson. I don’t know what it was but this issue was just plain good in the way that any story can be good–it has a great story even without any super heroes in it.
But let’s continue after the break and we can go into more detail…

Dead of Night Featuring Warewolf By Night #1 Cover
My first impression when viewing the solicitations for the new year for the big 2 comic book publishers was “this is it?” Honestly, it felt a little underwhelming. Considering the fact that Marvel is coming off their big cross-over event, Secret Invasion and in the midst of a whole boat load of X-Men stuff, you’d think that more would be happening. Same for DC, where they are set to finish up their big cross-over, Final Crisis, is post-Batman R.I.P. and is also finishing up Superman’s major New Krypton story arc. But then I dug a little deeper and pulled out a whole bunch of great gems to get excited for. And I’m sure there’ll be more, as many Marvel solicitations are still classified until Secret Invasion wraps up next month. January is shaping up to be a pretty good month to be a comic book fan. And guess what, it is also my birthday month. So, faithful readers, I expect each and every one of you to go out and get me a comic book for my birthday. Seriously. Do it! But until then, read on for some previews so you can decide which one to get me…

Dear Marvel,
My name is Mike Rapin. I’m a pretty big fan of almost everything you do. There are a few things here and there that I disagree with (How you dealt with Xorn, Gambit becoming and unbecoming Death, Mini-Marvels, the last of Kirkman’s Ultimate X-Men) but for the most part, I can deal with it. I really can. You tend to bring things back and make me, the reader, 90% happy all of the time. Not saying that you couldn’t do 95%, but you got to 90% and that’s better than what other companies (NBC-Heroes, Disney-Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Warner Bros.-Alexander) can do with an extremely brilliant staff of writers, artists and creators.

 Amazing Spider-Man #573 cover
Have you been keeping up with Spider-Man? Have you? Because if not, you need to find the last 5 issues and buy this week’s issue. Mr. Dan Slott kicked so much ass in this New Ways To Die arc… so much ass. Coupled with John Romita Jr.’s art the last six issues of Amazing Spider-Man have been some of the most interesting and well developed comics I have read in a long time.
Previously, we’ve seen the creation of “Anti-Venom” in this series, the loss of Venom (well, Mac Gargan’s body lost the symbiote thanks to Anti-Venom) and then some craziness with the craziest man in comics: Norman Osborn. This month, it all comes to wraps in Amazing Spider-Man #573. But read on.. I dare you…

There are plenty of great books coming out this week. Actually, many of the big books from Marvel are coming out this week. Unfortunately, nothing really special to talk about. But, I did manage to find 3 books that I think are worth paying particular attention to this week, all from Marvel. So read on, True Believers!

Amazing Spider-Man #570 50/50 variant cover by John Romita Jr.
I was going to start this off all cheezy like with a poem or something to bring something new to the table, because god knows I say the words “amazing” and “awesome” enough, but I gave up because after writing 2 lines I remembered that I’m not a fucking pet. Excuse my harsh language before the break, but it’s seriously true. I laugh about it though…
Aaanyways, this week’s issue of Amazing Spider-Man (#570) was quite a page-turner for me. I don’t know what the Spidey writers are cooking up but so far, it smells great. We’ve got multiple plots pulling together, major conspiracies, Brand New Day aftermath effects topping some plot points and just plain-old fun Spider-Man bringing it all together. We’ve got Dan Slott heading the writing team for this arc (this issue is smack dab in the middle of the “New Ways To Die” arc) and the ever-so-amazing John Romita Jr. is providing the unequivocally perfect art.
But let me continue and spoil it all for you…

So, this week I decided to just continue my sort of “Rapid Reviews” to which I call, if you didn’t guess it, Tuesday Twist-offs.
Let me lay down what I’m going to speed through for you real quick:
Does that work for you? Well, it works for me. Let’s begin.
**definite spoilers and randomness after the break**
